A new proposal for metric in perceptual multidimensional scaling
نویسندگان
چکیده
We analyze a simplified probability model that assumes normality and homoscedasticity of vowel parameters’ distributions. We arrive at explicit formulae that describe functional relationship between a natural Euclidean distance function in the model and the confusability of vowel categories. We propose a solution to address a common case when confusability of a pair of vowel categories is very low, which leads to uncertainty of distance value. The solution is applicable when the class boundary is provided by a real-valued discriminating function. Examples of perceptual vowel diagrams obtained with new metric are presented based on vowel samples spoken by male speakers from TIMIT corpus.

Using Multidimensional Scaling for Assessment Economic Development of Regions
Addressing socio-economic development issues are strategic and most important for any country. Multidimensional statistical analysis methods, including comprehensive index assessment, have been successfully used to address this challenge, but they donchr('39')t cover all aspects of development, leaving some gap in the development of multidimensional metrics. The purpose of the study is to const...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Perceptual and Physical Space of Fricatives
This study investigates the correlations between perceptual and other process is involved, for example; the distance metric may be physical spaces of voiceless English fricatives /f 6 s 5 h/, using Multidimensional scaling (MDS) technique. The spatial representations were constructed from perceptual similarity judgments and various spectral distance measures [1]. The results show that physical ...
متن کاملPerceptual Similarity among Nasals Varying in Place of Articulation: a Multidimensional Scaling Analysis
To examine perceptual similarity in cross-language speech perception as a multidimensional metric, an AXB classification test using nasal consonants from Malayalam ([m], [n+ ], [n], [÷], [ø], [N]) was administered to three sets of listener groups with common coronal nasal inventories: dental-retroflex (Marathi, Punjabi), alveolar-retroflex (Tamil, Oriya), and alveolar (Bengali, American English...
متن کاملA New Solution to the Additive Constant Problem in Metric Multidimensional Scaling*
A new solution to the additive constant problem in metric multidimensional scaling is developed. This solution determines, for a given dimensionality, the additive constant and the resulting stimulus projections on the dimensions of a Euclidean space which minimize the sum of squares of discrepancies between the formal model for metric multidimensional scaling and the original data. A modificat...
متن کاملThe Solution of the Metric STRESS and SSTRESS Problems in Multidimensional Scaling Using New- ton’s Method1
This paper considers numerical algorithms for finding local minimizers of metric multidimensional scaling problems. Two popular optimality criteria (STRESS and SSTRESS) are considered, the leading algorithms for each are carefully explicated, and a new algorithm is proposed. The new algorithm is based on Newton’s method and relies on a parametrization that has not previously been used in multid...
